Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor’s wife Mariyam Nashwa has on Thursday appealed to the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM), to order the Maldives Correctional Service (MSC) to transfer him to house arrest following doctor’s recommendation following his deteriorating health condition.

Addressing a letter to the commission on Thursday, Nashwa stressed that recent CT scan reports show that Adeeb’s internal cysts have significantly grown in number following which the doctor had recommended for him to be transferred to house arrest due to his ailing health.

Highlighting that adequate medical treatment is a basic right guaranteed to everyone, Nashwa wrote that Adeeb, although having been convicted for crime, must not be exempt from this right.

The last time Adeeb was brought to capital city Male’ for medical checkups was on the 10th of October.

Nashwa further stated that it is required for Adeeb to be transferred to house arrest as the prison cell is not fit for his condition at the moment.

The former vice president is serving a 33-year jail sentence for multiple charges including an attempted assassination of the president and massive case of graft involving the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC).

Ever since his incarceration, the former VP faces several health complications. As such, Adeeb has been diagnosed with an internal cyst, kidney stones, and vision impairment from glaucoma since his incarceration in 2015.

The state continues to reject the family’s continuous appeal to grant him medical leave, having stated that he may only be released once he pays back the millions embezzled from state funds.
