The Supreme Court of the Maldives has scheduled appeal hearings in the cases of four dismissed opposition-aligned lawmakers for the next two days.
The Elections Commission (EC) had declared that the 12 lawmakers were removed from parliament after violating a floor-crossing ban.
Thus far, appeal hearings are yet to begin in the cases of MP for Thimarafushi constituency, Mohamed Mustafa, MP for Ihavandhoo constituency, Mohamed Abdulla, MP for North-Fuvahmulah constituency Ali Shah and MP for Hanimaadhoo constituency Hussain Shahudhee.
Court has scheduled the hearing in MP Mustafa’s case to begin at 1300 hrs on Wednesday and MP Shah’s hearing to begin at 1400 hrs the same day. MP Mohamed’s case has been scheduled for 1000 hrs on Thursday, and finally MP Shahudhee’s hearing will commence at 1300 hrs on Thursday.
The Supreme Court last week ruled to re-seat four of the 12 MPs in Parliament. They are MP for Thulusdhoo constituency, Mohamed Waheed Ibrahim, MP for Villingili constituency, Saud Hussain, MP for Maduvvari constituency, Mohamed Ameeth and MP for Dhihdhoo constituency, Abdul Latheef Mohamed.
The Apex Court on Tuesday, concluded the appeal hearings for MP for Dhangethi constituency Ahmed Ilham and MP for North-Thinadhoo constituency Saudhulla Hilmy.
The appeal hearings for MP for South-Mahchangoalhi constituency, Abdulla Sinan and MP for South-Thinadhoo constituency Abdulla Ahmed have also concluded. The court will give their verdict in the next hearing.
