A case regarding Adhaalath Party’s leader Imran Abdulla's 12-year prison sentence has been filed at the Supreme Court for review.
RaajjeMV understands that this is not the first time the opposition leader’s conviction has been filed for review, as their earlier appeal was rejected. had previously filed an appeal which was rejected by the court.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Imran’s lawyer and Adhaalath Party’s Deputy Leader Ali Zahir said that it is important for the transition process that the leaders of the joint opposition parties are freed.
Imran was jailed following the 2015 May Day rally, and he was found guilty of terrorism-related charges over a speech he gave at the rally. His February 2016 conviction was upheld by the High Court in August 2017.
Imran is currently under house arrest.
The only two opposition leaders whose convictions have not been nullified are Imran and former President Mohamed Nasheed.
Nasheed, who is in self-exile, has announced that he will be returning to Maldives on November 1, and his party is preparing a huge event to welcome him.
