While numerous corruption allegations are being pinned on outgoing President Abdulla Yameen, it does not seem as though he wants to hold himself accountable, says prominent attorney Hisaan Hussain.
Speaking on a live program on RaajjeTV, the attorney said that the accusations against President Yameen are serious allegations of corruption and graft.
She said that President Yameen has been accused of carrying out inhumane acts and illegitimately influencing state institutions, and that he needs to be held accountable for these accusations.
However, we are now observing him trying to avoid answering to the allegations, said Hisaan, going on to assert that thorough investigations must be conducted in the alleged plots.
“We pledge to bring back justice, to this country. As such, bringing perpetrators to justice is one of its components” said Hisaan.
Stressing that the citizens have a fear that the outgoing president may flee the country, Hisaan highlighted that there are a few days before President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is sworn in, higlighting that Solih does not have the power to stop Yameen from fleeing the country yet.
However, Hisaan noted that state institutions have the power to stop such a thing from happening and that senior government officials must investigate said allegations, in order to stop him from fleeing the country if he has the intention to do so.
“There have been a lot of allegations against President Yameen filed at the Maldives Police Service (MPS). Ones filed by state institutions, ones filed by private parties as well as ones filed by political parties. We do not believe adequate investigations can be conducted if President Yameen were to flee the country before they commence” said Hisaan.
Hisaan further said that she hopes a fair trial is conducted in the allegations against the outgoing president.
