No legal basis to annul president election, rules Maldives top court
The bench of judges did not find a reason to annul the result
The verdict was heard close to two hours since hearing began
No result-changing issues had been noted

The Supreme Court of the Maldives has on Sunday, ruled that there is no reason to annul the 2018 presidential election.

While outgoing President Abdulla Yameen had earlier this month filed the case at Supreme Court, all five justices had voted against annulling the election.

They declared that there are 'no legal grounds' to annul September's presidential election.

Noting that the outgoing president is also seeking for an investigation into the vote rigging allegations, the court ruled against this as well.

The first hearing in the case was held on October 14, with back-to-back hearings held till Tuesday. At the last hearing. the bench of judges decided not to hear the secret witnesses submitted by Yameen's legal team, and had instead heard the closing statements from all sides.

Yameen lost his bid for reelection after receiving just 96,052 votes while his opponent, Ibrahim Mohamed Solih received 134,705 votes. While he had initially conceded defeat, he said that the reason for filing the case was 'due to the thousands of complaints received regarding the voting process'.

While the case was filed against the Elections Commission, the opposition parties- Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), Jumhooree Party (JP) and Adhaalath Party (A)- had later intervened in the case.
