Former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb Abdul Ghafoor’s wife, Mariyam Nashwa has asked the Cancer Society of the Maldives to bring the world's attention to her husband's case.
While Adeeb has been sentenced to a total of 33 years in prison over multiple charges with more cases pending, Nashwa has continued to express concern over his deteriorating medical condition.
Nashwa made the call via twitter on Friday, retweeting a post by the society showing its Chairperson, Juwairiya Saeed attending the annual World Cancer Leaders Summit for 2018.

In her tweet Nashwa asked the society to tell the world there is a person jailed in “solitary confinement” who has been denied doctor prescribed cancer screening for the past three years. Stressing that Adeeb’s brother had died from an internal cyst that had developed into cancer, the former VP’s wife highlighted that Adeeb has the same type of cyst in the same place.
While the Cancer Society tweeted pictures of their Chairperson’s attendance at the annual summit, where global leaders for cancer control come together, the most important part of the summit was discussions about the importance of adequate treatment for every single cancer patient, or #TreatmentForAll.

Doctors had prescribed a cancer screening for the jailed VP, not too long after his incarceration in 2015. As such, after discovering internal cysts in his body, doctors had advised him to undergo a screening at year end, especially given his family history. However, the state has till date, failed to grant him approval to travel abroad for the treatment which is unavailable in Maldives, alleging that he posed a flight risk.
President Abdulla Yameen had declared that Adeeb may be granted medical leave, after he pays back the millions he embezzled from state funds. This accusation by the outgoing came with zero evidence, as such, none of the courts had issued such a verdict on Adeeb and President Yameen had later on, confessed that he had “personal” issues with his former VP.
Other diagnoses of Adeeb include kidney stones and vision impairment from glaucoma as well as cataracts since his incarceration. The family has been imploring from the state to grant Adeeb medical leave “before he goes completely blind”.
