While all of the powers of the state begin from the people, most of the people have said no to President Abdulla Yameen and so, he is now in the past, that ship has sailed says Member of Parliament for Maduvvari constituency, Mohamed Ameeth.
Speaking on program aired by RaajjeTV on Friday night, Ameeth said that President Yameen’s leadership has come to an end. Ameeth’s comment comes at a time senior members of the ruling Progressive Party of the Maldives (PPM) are seen giving the party members unrealistic hopes, having filed a constitutional case at the Supreme Court to nullify the result of the 2018 Presidential Election.
Highlighting that President Yameen’s predecessors have all shown a great example to the citizens, the MP said that President Yameen is a complete let-down to the citizens. As such, President Yameen had even in his last days in office refused to accept loss and threw a tantrum when he should have accepted defeat like a good leader. Ameeth further asserted the President Yameen is not a leader who knows the good etiquette of governing.
“I do not believe the Supreme Court can go against the voice of the people, because all the powers of the state do not begin from courts, but from the citizens. As such, no institution or state body has the right to oppose the citizen’s decision when they have come out and spoken very clearly” said the lawmaker.
MP Ameeth’s statement comes at a time President Yameen had conceded defeat for the second time since losing his bid for re-election in the September polls. As such, while he had on the day following the announcement of the temporary results, announced his acceptance of loss publicly, he had later pinned various accusations on the Elections Commission for alleged vote rigging and encouraged his supporters to take to the streets to protest the election result, going on to file a constitutional case at the Supreme Court to annul the results. While the supreme Court is yet to issue it’s verdict in the case, President Yameen had on Thursday, conceded defeat for a second time in his farewell address to the citizens.
In his address, the President confessed that the past five years of his tenure has not been easy for him and that the one thing he could not anticipate was how easily people could be influenced to change their political leanings.
