EC says second evaluation did not reveal any reason to nullify election result

Elections Commission (EC) President Ahmed Shareef has said that a second evaluation of the presidential election did not reveal any reason to nullify the election result.

Speaking at a press conference on Wednesday regarding the ruling party’s allegations of electoral fraud, Shareef said that international observers and monitors have deemed the election as free and fair and that the EC has not yet received any official complaint.

The EC chief said that they have re-evaluated reports of the election procedures after the commission members were being accused of vote rigging but that they did not find any result-changing issue.

Refuting the ruling party’s claim, Shareef said that independent observers did not find any issue with the election, either.

President Abdulla Yameen and his supporters have been accusing the commission of rigging the election after his devastating loss to the opposition candidate on September 23.

A constitutional case regarding the election has been filed at the Supreme Court on the President’s behalf.
