United Kingdom’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office Minister for Asia and the Pacific, MP Mark Field on Sunday evening, met with members of civil societies and journalists in the Maldives.
MP Field arrived in Maldives along with Ambassador to Maldives James Dauris on Sunday morning and were welcomed at the Velana International Airport by Foreign Secretary Ahmed Sareer.
While MP Field and Ambassador Dauris had paid a courtesy call on President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to congratulate him on his momentous win in the Presidential ballots held on the 23rd of September, Field also had the chance to meet with Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Asim and Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
“The UK government and the international community expect that the will of the Maldivian people is fully upheld and we very much look forward to working with the new administration” said Field.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that both ministers had discussed on further enhancing the bilateral relations between Maldives and the UK with the UK government’s willingness to work with the incoming government to strengthen human rights and democracy in the Maldives.
“The UK looks forward to a smooth transition to the new government and to parliament flourishing” reads a tweet posted by MP Field after the meeting.
The September 23 election has been deemed free, fair and transparent by local and international observers.
