President Yameen and the ruling party has been accusing EC members of rigging the presidential election

Elections Commission (EC) chief Ahmed Shareef has said that four members of the Commission have fled to Sri Lanka over death threats.

In a phone interview to RaajjeMV on Friday night, Shareef said that they have been repeatedly threatened since announcing the results of the presidential election.

He said that employees at the commission are also been threatened and that they have filed a complaint at the police service.

Commission vice president Amjad Mustafa as well as members Ahmed Akram, Ali Nashath, and Ismail Habeeb are currently in Sri Lanka, adding that Habeeb is in the neighboring country for medical treatment.

Shareef also told RaajjeMV that the police service has not yet responded to his complaint over an alleged audio clip of him being circulated on social media.

President Abdulla Yameen conceded defeat after opposition candidate Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s landslide electoral win but later began accusing the Elections Commission of rigging the election. The ruling party’s subsequent protests have been receiving a low turnout.
