President Abdulla Yameen has said that a never-heard-of-before plane will land in Velana International Airport before election day.
Speaking at a campaign event in ADh. Maamigili on Tuesday, President Yameen said that "the world's largest airplane A38" will land at the main airport before September 23.
He said that it was similar to a small nation sending a rocket to the moon and repeatedly mentioned the "A38", even though there is no such plane in existence.
While the President is facing public ridicule for his claim, it is likely he was referring to the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger airliner.
President Yameen’s administration is spending USD 1.2 billion to develop Velana airport, and has scheduled the inauguration of its new runway and other facilities to take place before election day.
