JP celebrates its 10-year anniversary
Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that peaceful political activities conducted by political parties are the foundation for building a nation.
The opposition leader said this on Twitter on Jumhooree Party (JP)’s 10-year anniversary on Friday.
In the tweet, Nasheed congratulated JP leader Qasim Ibrahim and all other party members on the occasion.
To mark their anniversary on Friday morning, JP held a flag-raising ceremony and officially opened the party headquarters.
While the party celebrates its anniversary, its leader Qasim has been given a three-year prison sentence and has since sought asylum in Germany after traveling abroad for medical treatment.
Other senior members of the party have also left Maldives following the political turmoil in the country. They include former deputy leader Ameen Ibrahim, council member Sobah Rasheed, and recently-appointed party president Ali Waheed.
They left the country during the mass arrests after the 2015 may day rally, the larges opposition protest ever held in Maldives.
