The Criminal Court has cancelled its hearing on the ‘government overthrow’ charges against Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon due to administrative issues.
A court official confirmed this to RaajjeMV on Wednesday, although the Criminal Court had not specified on what said matters are.
The Criminal Court had scheduled hearings on two high-profile cases for Wednesday.
In addition to a hearing on terrorism allegations against MP Faris for conspiring to overthrow government, a hearing is also scheduled in the state’s charges against Galolhu-south constituency MP Ahmed Mahloof for ‘submitting false information’.
The state raised said charges against MP Mahloof on January 20th, in relation to a tweet he sent out reporting on deaths at the state-run detention facility in Maafushi island. In said tweet, Mahloof insinuated that prisoners at Maafushi are being ‘killed’.
Prosecutors have accused MP Faris of conspiring to overthrow the government through bribing fellow lawmakers. Faris’ father, and Maldives’ former longstanding president, Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has also been implicated in the matter and been sentenced for obstructing the police’s investigation.
