President Abdulla Yameen has officially inaugurated the sewerage system in Shaviyani atoll Milandhoo on Tuesday.

Speaking in the ceremony held to commemorate the system that cost over MVR 56 million from the state budget, Minister of Environment and Energy Thoriq Ibrahim said that four years ago, residents of Milandhoo had proposed several services lacking in the island, adding that most of them have been completed.

As such, the state had brought a solution to the island’s electricity issued as well as difficulties in waste management. According to the Ministry, a 13.2-meter sewerage network had been installed and five pump stations under the sewerage system.

While the sewerage system services 700 households, the ministry said that a 150-meter outflow pipe has been installed for draining waste.

The sewerage system project was contracted to Maldives Water and Sewerage Company on the 19th of August 2014 and was initially opened for use in March 2017.

Moreover, Minister Thoriq highlighted that works to provide clean drinking water to Milandhoo residents is also proceeding at a swift rate, adding that it will be completed soon and that they are currently working on installing waterpipes in the island.

The clean drinking water scheme is funded by a loan from the OPEC Fund for International Development and the state budget to add up to MVR 46,926,382.76 million.

Under this project, two reverse osmosis plants that produce up to 19 tons of water per hour and stretches up to 29 kilometers will be installed in Milandhoo. A total of 164 tons of water will be produced In the RO plant according to the ministry.
