President Abdulla Yameen’s administration is trying to remain in power by ‘hastily’ making legal amendments to disqualify candidates, says the current administration’s first Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel.
In a tweet on Tuesday, Dr. Jameel noted that the government has also recently been appointing Supreme Court justices.
In the tweet, Dr. Jameel urged the United Nations, the European Union, and neighboring India to “help our people” and take strong action against President Yameen and his “regime”.
#Maldives regime humiliated in door to door campaign & convinced of defeat tries to remain in power by hastily appointing SC & disqualifying candidates via legal amendments. Strongly urge @UN @EUCouncil & @MEAIndia to help our people & take strong action against YAG & regime.

The parliament committee has recently approved a bill that would ban anyone who has received asylum abroad from contesting in presidential elections, which the opposition say is specifically targeted at their leaders, former President Mohamed Nasheed and Jumhoree Party leader Qasim Ibrahim, who have fled their prison convictions and are living abroad after receiving asylum.
The Judicial Service Commission (JSC) has also sent the name of Dr. Ahmed Abdulla Didi to be approved for the position of Supreme Court Chief Justice by President Yameen, after the previous Chief was sentenced to prison.
