Officers of the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) were active in the Maafannu ward of the capital Malé City on Saturday night, following what seemed like a blast inside a drainage system.

The blast occurred inside the drainage system in front of ‘West View’ house, the former residence of current Vice President Abdulla Jihad.

Military and fire and rescue officers were active at the scene when RaajjeMV journalists headed there after receiving a tip. The road was cordoned off by officers of the Maldives Police Service (MPS).

Eyewitnesses told RaajjeMV that loud sounds that sounded 'like an explosion' had been heard at the area at 10:30pm. RaajjeMV received information regarding ‘a possible blast’ at around 11pm.

Video footage shows what seems like a small fire and explosion inside the drainage system, while a loud bang was heard as well.

Officers active at the scene said that this was ‘due to water getting inside the system after a cable was cut’.

The military officers left moments after RaajjeMV journalists arrived at the scene, after handing over the operation to officials of the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO). These officials were able to solve the issue after cutting off electricity at the area.

Bystanders said that some members of the public had cleaned the area, including the drain, on Saturday.

RaajjeMV understands that West View belong to VP Jihad’s wife, but the family has since moved to a flat in Rehendhi Residence in the Galolhu ward of the city.
