Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has on Monday informed the family of former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb that they are unable to provide him special protection.

MCS has informed of this in response to a letter addressed to them on the 11th of June, by the former VP’s wife, Mariyam Nashwa.

Nashwa had on Monday posted the response letter addressed to her by the MCS via her official twitter account.

According to the letter, Adeeb is not being provided with special protection as he does not fit in the criteria, and that Adeeb will be granted one familial visit per month similar to ‘other prisoners’.

Following this response by the MCS, Nashwa had responded asking them why Adeeb does not fit the criteria to be granted special protection, to which the MCS is yet to respond.

Moreover, Nashwa had posed queries on who the ‘other prisoners’ mentioned in MCS’s letter are.

MCS had earlier informed Nashwa that Adeeb was granted special protection prior to an assessment review, following which it was taken back. Responding to this Nashwa had said that Adeeb never received special protection during his time in prison.

The former VP’s wife further said in a tweet posted on Monday afternoon that Adeeb was being granted family visits previously when he was transferred to Dhoonidhoo and that it was arranged according to police regulations.

Nashwa added in her tweet that she wished to inquire about the review, process and procedure under which Adeeb is being treated behind bars.

Nashwa further expressed her concern that while prisoners who had held senior state positions are being granted special protection, her husband is being singled out.

The family of the former VP who is serving prison sentences totaling 33 years, are continually appealing on the authorities to grant him adequate medical attention, given his ailments.
