LGA to suspend Ukulhas council members over involvement in MDP primaries
Some of the individuals who had partaken in the primaries had been sacked from their posts as well
A letter was written to Ukulhas council chief Shaukath Ibrahim and deputy chief Abdulla Firaq
MDP is to hold their national congress in the island from the 29th till the 30th of June.

The Local Government Authority (LGA) has begun investigating the case of two councilors of Alif Alif Ukulhas island who were actively involved in the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) presidential primaries held on the 30th of May.

A letter addressed to Ukulhas council chief Shaukath Ibrahim and deputy chief Abdulla Firaq, reads that the LGA had received information that the two councilors had partaken in the opposition primaries albeit the civil court having released a temporary court order for the Maldives Police Service (MPS) to halt it’s primary elections as it had allowed leader and former President Mohamed Nasheed to contest.

The LGA in it’s letter asked the councilors to send in anything they would like to highlight and describing how things had gone that day via letter or statement before 12:00 p.m on Monday. The letter further reads that if the councilors do not respond by then, the LGA will proceed with the investigation in their case.

While LGA has begun probing matters of island council having partaken in MDP primaries, some of the individuals who had partaken in the primaries had been sacked from their posts as well.

Although the Elections Commission had threatened the party with dissolution if it were to let Nasheed contest for party ticket, he had won the ticket for the upcoming presidential election with over 40,000 votes.

While LGA has begun looking into the case of the two Ukulhas councilors, MDP is to hold their national congress in the island from the 29th till the 30th of June.
