Member of Parliament for South-Galolhu constituency, Ahmed Mahloof has called on the opposition coalition to announce a common candidate to contest in the Presidential Election, while there is still time.
In a tweet posted on Monday, Mahloof wrote that he was placed behind bars for 11 months for taking to the streets to call for the release of detained opposition leaders, and that he faces a 17-year jail term for taking to the streets to call for the implementation of the initial Supreme Court ruling issued on the 1st of February.
"I worked for four years to guarantee the candidacy for opposition leaders. I will continue to do so," reads the MP's tweet.
The MP who faces multiple charges said that he desires to see the announcement of a coalition candidate "before it is too late."
MP Mahloof said on Sunday that former President Mohamed Nasheed is the ideal candidate but thinks his party's parliamentary group leader MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to be the "best choice" if he cannot contest.
Mahloof has also backed the idea of candidates contesting in the election to form a coalition on the second round and for an MDP member to contest for presidency with a JP member as his running mate.
