The Maldivian Democratic Party held its primary elections under irresolute circumstances with the Elections Commission having threatened to dissolve the party

Current members of the Elections Commission will be tried and prosecuted after the upcoming presidential elections conclude, MP Imthiyaz Fahmy has said.

The lawmaker said this in a post on his official Twitter account, through which he also expressed his conviction that incumbent President Abdulla Yameen will be ousted through the ballots.

While the parliamentarian’s post said ‘all members of the commission will face strong criminal charges’, it is primarily aimed at recently elected chair Ahmed Shareef.

The post is attached with a photograph of Shareef speaking at a rally hosted by the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives.

In it, Imthiyaz sarcastically quips ‘is this the nonpartisan and independent man who says he will take action against the MDP [Maldivian Democratic Party]?’.

The Maldivian Democratic Party held its primary elections under irresolute circumstances with the Elections Commission having threatened to dissolve the party if it allows former president Mohamed Nasheed, its only candidate, to contest.

The party has denounced the threats as ‘unlawful and unwarranted strict measures’ and maintained that Nasheed has been proven to be a victim of unfair prosecution and highlighted the United Nations Human Rights Commission call to quash his conviction and ‘restore his political rights’.

While Nasheed won the ticket with over 43,000 votes in his favour, the Elections Commission has said that it is pursuing action against the party for having held the ballots and that commission members are discussing the matter.
