Ihavandhoo constituency MP Mohamed “Muhamma” Abdulla has said that the island’s councilors “will not back down”, no matter the number of times they are suspended.
Five members of the Ihavandhoo council were issued a three-month suspension earlier this week, about a month after they returned to work after a previous suspension.
In a tweet posted in Dhivehi following their second suspension, MP Mohamed said that not allowing the councilors to do the work they were elected to do ‘shows the current government’s absurdness’.
“Even if they are suspended over and over again, the current government knows that the five councilors will not back down,” he added to the tweet.
The Local Government Authority (LGA) suspended the five councilors, for allegedly obstructing the work of home ministry employees, without pay.
The five were suspended last December as well- also for three months- right after Fishermen’s Day, for allegedly joining a protest held against the government and obstructing the work of the government. They returned to work on May 2.
Ihavandhoo constituency MP Mohamed also took part in the said protest organized by fishermen.
A number of fishermen have expressed dissatisfaction over the government’s failure to fulfill incumbent President Abdulla Yameen’s 2013 campaign pledge, that professional fishermen ‘would receive a monthly income of at least MVR 10,000 regardless of their yield’.
