Suspected drugs wash up on Uligamu after Iranian vessel runs aground

As authorities approached the vessel, its crew had set it ablaze and eight of them had attempted to escape

A number of items police believe to be narcotic substances washed up on the shores of Uligamu island in Haa Alif atoll on Thursday.

Ahmed Ziyaadh, chief of the island’s council, said that the items were discovered by Uligamu residents.

Ziyaadh also said that parts of the Iranian vessel that ran aground while going through Maldivian waters on Thursday, and then torched by the boat’s crew, had also washed up on the island.

The Iranian vessel ran aground near the island on Thursday. As authorities approached the vessel, its crew had set it ablaze and eight of them had attempted to escape.

Police have now taken the items under custody.
