President of the Adhaalath Party (AP)'s Foreign Relations Committee, Shidhatha Shareef has said that it will put in its best efforts to ensure that problems within political parties do not worsen, saying that the competition between parties ‘has not yet gone out of hand’.
In a tweet posted on her official twitter account late Monday, Shidhatha wrote that competitiveness is in human nature and that it may cause unpleasant circumstances to arise, but asserted that the competition among the Joint Opposition is yet to get out of hand.
Shidhatha's tweet comes amid rumors that disputes have stirred within the coalition opposition parties, with its leaders criticizing each other, prior to the Presidential Elections slated for later this year.
The main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) is to hold its presidential primary on Wednesday, with its only candidate and party leader Mohamed Nasheed having concluded ‘a successful campaign’ at a final event held on Tuesday night.
While Jumhooree Party (JP)'s deputy leader Ameen Ibrahim had criticized Nasheed's candidacy having brought distress upon the public, some senior members of MDP had responded with strong verbal attacks, creating slight distress among some members of both parties.
However, later on JP leader Qasim Ibrahim had taken to twitter, assuring that the Joint Opposition remains committed to bringing forth one candidate for the elections.
The first round of presidential elections is to be held in September.
