Young goalkeeper Ibrahim Labaan Shareef, who was serving a five years jail sentence, has been released on Sunday.
Labaan was released after three years and two weeks, while two more years on his sentence remain. The individual arrested for obstruction of police duty during the 2015 May Day protest has also requested for clemency last year.
RaajjeMV understands that the Clemency Board excused more than a year from the well-known goalkeeper's jail sentence.
The media official from the Maldives Correctional Service (MCS), Ahmed Lugman told RaajjeMV that Labaan has been released under parole with agreement to the necessary conditions. However, no further information was provided by MCS.
Labaan who was arrested for 'attacking' a police officer during the protest organized by the opposition on 1st May 2015, was sentenced to jail on 25th July 2016. Apart from Labaan, five other individuals also received jail sentences. While a total of eight protesters were arrested during the May Day protest 2015, only two were pardoned from any charges.
The individual released after three years in prison used to be a well known goal keeper in the Maldives. Labaan who was the goalkeeper for team Eagles at the time of the arrest had been active as a muezzin during his time in Maafushi jail.
