The national advisory committee for the presidential election held its first meeting on Tuesday.
The meeting was held from 11am to 12pm.
A total of 17 members are in the committee- 10 from state institutions, six from political parties, and one representing organizations.
Elections Commission (EC) said that committee members discussed their plans for the elections this year, slated for September.
Incumbent President Abdulla Yameen has announced he will be running on ruling party PPM’s ticket. While the main opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) opened up opportunity to contest in its primaries on Tuesday, its party leader and former president Mohamed Nasheed is the only one seen campaigning so far. Umar Naseer, the current administration’s first home minister, has announced he will be running as an independent.
