The parliament secretariat has announced that the sitting scheduled for Wednesday has now been postponed to this coming Sunday, without revealing a reason for doing so.
The motions or bills on agenda for the sitting is yet unclear, although there have been unconfirmed reports that pro-government lawmakers wish to propose that the number of adjudicators on the Supreme Court bench be increased.
RaajjeMV understands that MP Ahmed Nihan, leader of the Progressive Party of Maldives’ parliamentary group, had asked his colleagues to attend the sitting.
The last parliament sitting was held last month, on the 14th of March. The parliament has held 10 sessions thus far this year.
The government’s opponents in parliament, parties of the Joint Opposition, have questioned the validity of sittings held under the embattled speaker of parliament Abdulla Maseeh. Opposition aligned lawmakers have boycotted all sittings held this year.
