Justice Ali Hameed has to sleep in jail with an oxygen mask on every night, his lawyer has said.
During a Criminal Court hearing on Tuesday, lawyer Mahfooz Saeed said that the correctional service is aware of his condition in jail, to which the presiding judge Adam Arif replied that the court also knows about it.
The lawyer noted that Justice Hameed is now having to travel from the island prison to the court in Male’ for the daily hearings, which is deteriorating his health, adding that Hameed had to be treated by the prison doctor on Tuesday.
Justice Hameed, Chief justice Abdulla Saeed, and former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom were present at Tuesday’s hearing on obstruction charges. While Justice Saeed and former President Maumoon were questioned, due to the late hours, the hearing concluded after postponing Justice Hameed’s questioning to another date. However, lawyer Mahfooz expressed concern that a hearing has been scheduled for the next day.
Hameed is charged with obstruction, bribery, and terrorism for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government. He has been remanded for the rest of the terrorism trial.
