The Government of Maldives has established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Congo.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affaris, the Joint Communiqué formalizing diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on Friday. Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ali Naseer Mohamed signed on behalf of the Maldives, at a ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Maldives to the UN in New York, while Congo’s representative to the UN, Raymonf Serge Balé signed on behalf of the country.

The ministry noted that the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries ‘marks a historic opening for cooperation connecting the peoples of the two countries in all areas of mutual interest’.
The Central African country, bordering the South Atlantic Ocean, has a population of approximately 4.95 million.
While Congo is the 168th country to establish diplomatic ties with Maldives, the country recently established diplomatic relations with Zambia and Ivory Coast as well.
