Shahid calls on government to implement UNHRC decision
The government had earlier today rejected UNHRC decision to restore rights guaranteed to former President Nasheed to run for presidency

Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) National council member Abdulla Shahid has said that the Maldivian Constitution mandates the nation to abide by its treaty obligations.

In a tweet posted on Monday following the United Nations (UN) Human Rights Committee's declaration that leader of Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Mohamed Nasheed must be restored the right to run for preisdency under civil and political rights granted to him, Shahid called on the government to abide by the decision of the UNHRC.

The UN committee reminds the government that as Maldives is also a party to the Optional Protocol of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, it must abide by the decisions of the committee.

The President is mandated to abide by this under article 115 of the constitution which states "to enter into general treaties and agreements with foreign states and international organizations, which do not impose any obligations on citizens" and "to enter into and ratify, with the approval of the People’s Majlis, treaties and agreements with foreign states and international organizations, which impose obligations on citizens."
