EC to bar candidates who do not fit under 'legal ambit'
EC informs that regulation of political parties will begin in the near future
Shareef added that the Presidential Elections will proceed as scheduled with the voters list scheduled to be announced in May

Elections Commission has on Thursday stated that candidates for the Presidential Elections will be selected under legal ambit.

In a press conference held by the commission on Thursday evening, recently elected President, Ahmed Shareef said that candidates for the upcoming presidential elections will be selected within the laws and regular of the administration 'that is there at the time'.

While the Elections Commission made this statement, the opposition, including leader and former President Mohamed has state that the joint opposition will field a single candidate for the upcoming elections.

The former President had previously said that the person who will be contesting will be announced 'very soon'.

Speaking at the conference, Shareef said that no inquiries from the commission had been made on any party to reveal information they do not wish to reveal.

However, the allied opposition continues to accuse the commission of using their power to get inside information on the opposition movements, for the ruling party's gain.

EC also informs that regulation of political parties will begin in the near future.

While these talks are underway, the allied opposition have stated that they do not accept the conduct of regulatng political parties under a politically influenced EC.

Shareef added that the Presidential Elections will proceed as scheduled with the voters list scheduled to be announced in May.

Shareef further said that two political parties had applied for registration within the past two weeks and that the commission had denied registration for one of them, adding that details on said parties will be shared with the public on 15th of April, upcoming Sunday.
