No institutions attending concerns over violence in prisons: Hisaan Hussain
Jail brutality have been recorded at all the national institutions
None of the institutions have taken any steps regardless
International community is closely observing the situation in Maldives

Prominent lawyer Hisaan Hussain said that none of the institutions have addressed concerns on jail brutality despite it being a well-known issue today.

Speaking at a panel discussion under the name "Stop Yameen's jail brutality", Hisaan mentioned that even though she is speaking about the issue so openly for the first time, it is not the first time she has expressed concerns regarding jail brutality.

Hisaan also highlighted that all the national institutions have jail brutality on record and yet fail to take any necessary actions against the issue.

Jail brutality has increased exceedingly which Hisaan stated to be the reason for having to speak about the issue so openly in front of the general public. She added that many families have sent complaints to Maldives Correctional Service.

"Numerous families have reported concerns regarding jail brutality to Correctional Service. And many victims of jail brutality have spoken and even cried about the issue in front of judges", said Hisaan.

Lawyer Safa Shareef, who was also a penalist, talked about how power derives from and ends with the people in a democracy and therefore it is our responsibility to speak against inhumane treatment.

Safa further noted that brutality culture belonged in the past and commented that such issues will be investigated at a global level today, given that Maldives is part of several international organizations.

Safa mentioned that the international community is observing the situation in Maldives closely which is a sign that justice will be served eventually.

She also said that individuals infringing on peoples' rights and performing jail brutality will be made accountable for their actions someday. According to Safa it is foolish for such individuals to think there will be no consequences for their actions.
