The Joint Opposition parties held a protest on Sunday night in capital city Male’, as part of their series of rallies.

During the protest held at 10:30pm at opposition MDP’s campaign site, protesters called on authorities to implement the Supreme Court order on February 1 to release political prisoners and reinstate opposition MPs.

Police officers did not stop the protest, which continued until 11:30pm.

Monday night’s protest is to be held at opposition JP’s headquarters at M Kunooz.

Maldives fell into political turmoil after President Abdulla Yameen refused to implement the Supreme Court order and declared a state of emergency on February 5. After the declaration, authorities arrested Supreme Court Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed and Justice Ali Hameed at the courthouse, as well as former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom and numerous other politicians and government officials. They have since been accused of attempting to overthrow the government and have been remanded for the rest of their trials.

The opposition has been holding a series of protests every night in the capital city due to the government’s refusal to implement the order of the Supreme Court, which according to the Constitution has the final say in legal matters.
