Opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) has hoisted a party flag at its main headquarters in the capital Malé City.
The flag was hoisted by Ahmed “Hickory” Adam, who has served the government and the people since President Ibrahim Nasir’s administration, on Saturday night.
Afterwards, a party gathering was held near the headquarters, with senior MDP officials in attendance. A number of opposition supporters had taken part in the gathering as well.
Those that took part in the gathering called for the implementation of the ruling by the Supreme Court’s full bench on February 1, a ruling which incumbent President Abdulla Yameen describes as an attempted judicial coup.
Police officers have been removing the party flags hoisted by MDP supporters in various islands; officers had even cut down a palm tree in Nolhivaram of Haa Dhaalu atoll, after failing to remove a flag. This has prompted the locals to raise even more flags, with a group from Maamendhoo of Laamu atoll hoisting a rusted metal roof on the stead, after the flag that was hoisted there was removed by officers.
