Maldives Joint Opposition to hold special gathering on Thursday

The Maldives Joint Opposition is to hold a special gathering on Thursday night, after a long hiatus.

RaajjeMV understands that the gathering will be held at the Jumhooree Party headquarters, Maafannu Kunooz, starting at 9:15pm.

The gathering, titled ‘Stop Yameen’, comes a day after the release of the joint opposition parliamentary group leader, Hinnavaru MP Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and others. He, along with a number of senior opposition officials- including one of the leaders, former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom- were arrested under a prolonged state of emergency.

The Supreme Court had, on 1st February, issued the controversial ruling, ordering the release of high-profile political prisoners, and reinstating 12 opposition parliamentarians unseated by the Elections Commission.

However, incumbent President Abdulla Yameen refused to implement the order, and instead declared a 15-day nation-wide state of emergency four days later, which was later extended by 30 days through a parliament vote without the constitutionally required quorum of 43 lawmakers.
