Senior officials of the Maldives Joint Opposition were summoned to the police headquarters on Saturday.
Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP)’s spokesperson and Maafannu-North constituency MP Imthiyaz Fahmy, Maduvvari constituency MP Mohamed Ameeth, and President of Adhaalath Party’s Media Committee Ali Nazeer were summoned to the police to have samples of their photos and voices collected, for an ongoing investigation.
Speaking to the media afterwards, MP Imthiyaz’s defense attorney, Ahmed Abdulla Afeef said that police had asked to take his client’s photos and voice samples, but that they did not have a court order to do so. He added that the police have been informed that this can only be done after they obtain the required documents.
Imthiyaz also spoke to the media and highlighted that the investigation against him is “politically motivated”.
Speaking to RaajjeMV, MP Ameeth said that he had given the photos and voice samples as required by the police, but criticized the police’s conduct.
Adhaalath’s Nazeer also told RaajjeMV that he had provided the samples as requested by police, but highlighted that this “is harassment”.
RaajjeMV understands that all three are being accused of conspiring to overthrow the government.
