Family of jailed former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb has asked the Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) to handover his medical care to them, “if they are unable to do so”.

In a letter sent to the Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Shihan, Adeeb’s wife Mariyam Nashwa expressed concern over his health, as well as the delay in providing medical care.

The letter noted that when Adeeb’s condition had become progressively worse and that doctors had advised him to seek treatment with a specialist abroad. She added the MCS has the documents from the doctors as well.

Noting that it is MCS’s responsibility to ensure that the required procedures are completed to send the former VP abroad, Nashwa expressed concern over the delay in doing so.

The letter noted that the case is yet to be submitted to MCS’s medical board, adding that their “excuse” is not being able to make an appointment with a doctor for a required second opinion. Noting that the family was informed of this on the 15th of February, Nashwa emphasized that they are still using the same excuse, despite it being over a month since.

Hence, she asked the Commissioner of Prisons to handover the matter to them, “if the Corrections is having a hard time getting an appointment”.

She further reminded him that MCS will have to take responsibility if anything happens to her husband due to the delay in providing care, and asked to expedite the process.

Adeeb was diagnosed with glaucoma, kidney stones and internal cysts following his arrest in 2015 and had been advised to undergo cancer screening to which his family had appealed the government for permission to travel abroad to seek treatment.

The former vice president is currently serving a jail term of over 30 years on multiple allegations.
