Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom has been remanded for the remainder of his trial.

The former president was summoned for his remand hearing on Wednesday.

Gayoom was brought to the capital for a remand on Tuesday as well, but was transferred to back to Dhoonidhoo island prison after waiting seven hours at the court, where numerous other jailed politicians had also been summoned for their remand hearing.

Gayoom was arrested on February 5, the night the state of emergency was declared, and had been in jail for 44 days without a remand hearing.

He has been accused of bribing Supreme Court justices to issue the February 1 order to release nine political prisoners and reinstate 12 opposition MPs.
