The Criminal Court on Tuesday cancelled its hearing for Maldives' detained former presidnet Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who was brought to court but kept in waiting for about seven hours.
After having produced Maumoon in court at about 16:00 on Tuesday, he was kept in waiting as the remand hearing for Supreme Court justice Ali Hameed carried on. The court has remanded justice Ali Hameed until sentencing.
Maumoon is detained over allegations of attempting to overthrow the government and bribery. but is also now being accused of destroying evidence, has asked the Criminal Court to delay his remand hearing on the grounds that his lawyer is out of the country.
Police claim to have found evidence against Maumoon that include providing long-term financial assistance to aforesaid apex court Justice Ali Hameed.
Police also claim that they found a black suitcase containing documentary evidence against him.
