Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed has been ordered to remain in jail until the remainder of his trial.
Criminal Court extended his detention after summoning him on Tuesday.
Justice Hameed was arrested under the state of emergency decree for allegedly accepting bribes and attempting to overthrow the government. He was arrested on the night the state of emergency was declared. Officers had forcefully arrested him at the Supreme Court by climbing up the building and sneaking in through the roof.
The state of emergency is to end on Thursday.
His lawyer Mahfooz Saeed said the Criminal Court judge extended Justice Hameed’s detention according to criminal procedure, which Mahfooz noted has been suspended under the state of emergency decree. The judge said they began re-implementing criminal procedure today.
The judge did not reply to Mahfooz’s assertion that if criminal procedure has been re-implemented, Justice Hameed should receive the rights of the detained under it.
He questioned the likeliness of Hameed receiving justice, as the Criminal Court judge is proceeding with the trial in any way he wishes.
