The Maldives Police Service has revealed that only nine individuals, of hundred that had been apprehended at the demonstrations in the capital city, are being detained.

These nine individuals are eight men and nine women and have all been remanded. These detained individuals include three lawmakers.

The detained lawmakers are the Maldivian Democratic Party’s parliamentary group leader Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, its deputy leader Ali Azim and MP Ahmed Mahloof.

The police have been making mass arrests as their officers disperse demonstrations against the government, where activists primarily called for the resignation of the president. 

141 activists were arrested at the demonstration held on Friday as well, and the allied opposition parties have made allegations of brutality against the police's special operations unit.
