Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, detained over allegations of attempting to overthrow the government and bribery, has been brought to capital city Malé.

Maumoon, who is also now being accused of destroying evidence, has asked the Criminal Court to delay his remand hearing on the grounds that his lawyer is out of the country.

The Criminal Court has on Tuesday summoned a number of detainees in order to remand them. Detained Supreme Court Justice Ali Hameed and MP Ilham Ahmed have also been brought to the court.

Police claim to have found evidence against Maumoon that include providing long-term financial assistance to aforesaid apex court Justice Ali Hameed.

Police also claim that they found a black suitcase containing documentary evidence against him.
