The Maldives Police Service has released all but five detainees, out of hundreds, arrested at the anti-government demonstrations held in Malé the last two days.
The police arrested 141 activists who defied President Abdulla Yameen’s state of emergency, which has been challenged to be void initially and more so after its extension.
At Friday’s demonstration, the army was deployed to use tear gas on crowds gathered near the ‘green zones’ in Malé, high security areas that officers are always stationed at constantly patrol.
The police have released all but four activists arrested at Friday’s demonstration, while they arrested another 15 at the demonstration the following night.
The police said on Sunday that one of the 15 individuals apprehended at the demonstration on Saturday has now been remanded and is being held court-ordered custody.
Demonstrators have been gathering nightly, calling for President Yameen’s resignation, the release of unfairly detained individuals, and for the state of emergency to be lifted.
