Mariyam Shunana, lawyer at the Attorney General's office has called on the government to lift 'the unconstitutional state of emergency' declared across the nation.
The state of emergency was declared across the nation on the 5th of February for a period of 15 days, after days of political turmoil, and was extended by an additional 30 days on Tuesday.
Shunana's tweet, addressed to the Presidnt Abdulla Yameen, calls to lift the unconstitutional SOE imposed, adding that state of emergency 'should not be used as a weapon to restrict non-derogable liberties under Art 255 of the Constitution'.
Dearest Mr. President, Please lift the unconstitutional SoE imposed. SoE should not be used as a weapon to restrict non-derogable liberties under Art 255 of the Constitution. Thank you.

While a lawyer of the attorney general's office called to lift the state of emergency, there are reports that lawyers at the AG office had filed a petition, against it.
A number of lawyers have stated that the extension was passed through a parliament vote held without the constitutionally required quorum of 43 MPs.
