Protesters, calling on government to implement the Supreme Court ruling releasing high-profile prisoners, headed to the streets of Malé City on Saturday night.

The protest started in front the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) main campaign office at 9pm, and protesters moved to the streets at around 11:30pm when officers tried to disperse the crowd.

Some protesters were arrested from the rally, including Kendhoo constituency MP Ali Hussain, who was released later.

The opposition has been holding nightly protests since the Supreme Court issued its controversial ruling, with a special ‘warm up’ rally held on Friday; where the protesters first moved to the streets. Police used heavy pepper spray on the protesters a number of times.
