Lawmakers Ahmed Mahloof and Mohamed 'Muhammaa' Abdulla have been arrested from Friday’s opposition rally.

The joint opposition held a special ‘warm up’ rally on Friday, calling on the authorities to implement the Supreme Court ruling releasing nine high-profile political prisoners.

Both MPs were arrested from the oppositon's rally last Thursday as well, but was released not long after.

Earlier on Friday, MP Mahloof presented himself to police headquarters, as per his summon notice. He was summoned for questioning over a tweet.

In addition, Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) activist Rasheed Moosa and Aminath Sinana from its youth wing have been arrested, among others.

MDP’s deputy Mohamed Shifaz and national council member Hussain Amru were arrested even before Friday’s protest started.

Police had said that the opposition will not be allowed to proceed with their rally on Friday, as ‘it is not believed to be a peaceful one’.
