Opposition lawmakers carried out of parliament premises as military lockdown continues
Opposition lawmakers headed to parliament to inquire on why the sessions have been halted
While a session was set for February, it was cancelled over security concerns
Ruling party officials say that parliament will convene only after the state of emergency has been lifted

Opposition parliamentarians were ‘carried out’ of the parliament premises on Wednesday, as the military continues its lockdown.

A number of lawmakers headed to parliament this afternoon, to inquire on why the sessions have been halted.

While a session was initially scheduled for February, due to be addressed by President Abdulla Yameen, it was cancelled indefinitely, citing security concerns. According to local laws, parliament must convene in early February.

While the parliamentarians attempted to enter the parliament building by jumping over the gates, they were blocked by military officers in combat uniform. Those that were able to jump over the gates were carried out, over the gate, one by one by military officers.

The opposition argues that as representatives of the people, the parliamentarians must be able to enter the building and continue with their work.

While a state of emergency was declared on February 5, parliamentary group leader of the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has said that parliament will only convene after its been lifted.
