United States of America has called on the Government of Maldives to follow the verdict issued by Supreme Court on Thursday evening.

A statement released by Heather Nauert, Spokesperson at the State Department, stated that the ‘United States welcomes the decision by the Supreme Court to order the release of political prisoners and to reinstate elected members of parliament.’

‘The United States urges the Maldivian government to respect and abide by the Supreme Court ruling. It is imperative that the Maldivian President, government and security services uphold the constitution and rule of law and implement the court’s ruling in full,’ reads the brief statement.

 

The statement added that USA strongly supported freedom of expression for all Maldivians and called upon the Government to uphold it.
