Azima Shakoor to be made a Supreme Court justice, reports say
These reports follow a motion to impeach President Abdulla Yameen
Opposition lawmaker Saud Hussein said that government is attempting to devalue the sanctity of the Supreme Court

Reports have surfaced that the President’s Office is to appoint its minister for legal affairs, Azima Shakoor, to the Supreme Court.

These reports follow a motion to impeach President Abdulla Yameen, signed and filed by the four opposition parties and its leaders, though similar reports have surfaced previously as well.

Opposition lawmaker Saud Hussein said that government is attempting to devalue the sanctity of the Supreme Court, by treating it like a ‘regional magistrate court’.

He further criticized Azima Shakoor, who was once Attorney General as well and a prominent lawyer in the private sector, to say that her decisions have been detrimental to the Maldives.

While supporters of the government had fervently said that the motion has no legal basis, the Supreme Court has asked that particular documents be amended before it can be accepted.

The opposition announced on Tuesday that they are now working to do so.
