Dhiggaru constituency MP Ahmed Faris Maumoon has been arrested again, this time over allegations of conspiring to overthrow the government.
The parliamentarian, who is already charged with bribery and identity fraud, was released from custody on Thursday evening.
The President Office’s spokesperson, via twitter, said that an arrest warrant has been issued on Faris, adding that the President had ordered police officers to follow the warrant.
According to the arrest warrant, 'there are suspicions that if Faris remains free he will obstruct the investigation, hide evidence, tamper with evidence, destroy evidence and influence eyewitnesses'. The warrant was issued based on evidence from an anonymous witness.
Speaking to the media earlier today, MP Faris revealed that he had met with Police Commissioner Ahmed Areef, who told him of attempts to have him arrested again, by President Abdulla Yameen. However, authorities have denied that a meeting took place between the MP and Commissioner Areef.
