Leaders of the opposition parties have sent a letter to the Elections Commission (EC) on Sunday, over the decision to dismiss 12 parliamentarians from their seats.

The letter seeking a meeting with its members, was accepted by the Commission this afternoon.

A number of senior officials from the joint opposition went to EC to handover the letter, as well as some of the dismissed lawmakers.

In a tweet sent out afterwards, former state minister and council member of one faction of the ruling party, Yumna Maumoon revealed that the letter had been accepted by EC.

Furthermore, emphasizing that the MPs are yet to be officially informed of their dismissals, Yumna said that it is EC’s responsibility to clear up the confusion over the matter, before parliament sessions reconvene on 5th February.

Last week, the opposition leaders sent a letter to the Supreme Court over the matter, while the dismissed MPs sought to meet with Chief Justice Abdulla Saeed.

The opposition notes that the rights of over 60,000 citizens have been violated over the MPs removal from parliament, and called on the Supreme Court to guarantee MPs the right to represent their constituency in parliament.
